The Vital Disc Stats

Yeah, yeah. We know this is the only real reason you read these things anyway. So here are the vital disc stats for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on UHD Blu-Ray:

Picture Quality Score: 10 out of 10!

Even though this is an upscale, you’d be hard-pressed to notice. Every single detail in this film is crisp, bright, and well-done. Since this is an animated movie, I came in expecting it to be bright and colorful. But WOW! The extra colorspace from the HDR really added significantly to the wow-factor of this film. Every color (and there were millions and millions of them in every frame) was bright and absolutely gorgeous.

The HDR10 metadata really made Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse pop. The lighting perfectly conveyed the mood of every scene. Dark areas of the picture were clear and distinguished (no crushing that I could see). Bright areas were focused and exceptionally bright (again, no detectible crushing).

Regardless of the upscaled resolution of the movie, Into The Spider-Verse was crystal clear and sharp. Motion was clean and smooth throughout. Sony really hit it out of the park with this one.

Further Breakdown of the Artistic Choices Made in the Film

This film is animated, but it is a far departure from the seeming overabundance of CGI movies of late. For instance, the whole film was given a choppy framerate to imitate the effect of reading a comic book. This will bother some viewers, but it definitely hit home with me!

Another example of how this film distances itself from the likes of Disney or Pixar is filter-like layers on top of some of the frames and scenes. Sometimes there is a faint blurriness added to the edges of out-of-focus characters as well as a sort of chromatic aberration. There is also a 4-color dot pattern over some of the colors (again this is to make the film imitate reading a comic book).

Some viewers have expressed distaste in these choices. But I think they were fitting for the type of movie this was. These choices made the movie feel fresh in light of how many soulless animated movies are released these days.

Sound Quality: 10 out of 10!

The reviewer here at That AV Dude that reviewed this film does not have access to a Dolby Atmos enabled system. However, the Dolby TrueHD presentation of this film is borderline perfect.

Just like the picture quality for Into The Spider-Verse was masterfully done. From every “thwip” to every quip, the sound in this movie was incredibly engaging. LFE (Low-Frequency Effects) were booming but far from muddy. The soundstage felt wide and airy, while also managing to feel very tight and forward.

The soundtrack itself was well chosen. The heavy hip hop and jazz influences in the movie soundtrack helped show the truly well-done dynamic range and mastering of the film.

Overall Score for the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse UHD Blu-Ray

Overall, this movie is borderline perfect. Even though it is an upscale, the detail is off-the-charts and the colors/HDR pop like no other. The sound was engaging and really helped to bring the whole film together. Do not hesitate on picking up this for your collection. You will NOT be disappointed!

Overall Score: 10 out of 10!
